چکیده:
This mixed method study investigated the reasons for lack of skills in reading comprehension and summarization of L2 academic papers among Iranian MA English teaching students. 50 postgraduate English teaching students from ACECR Institute of Higher Education (Isfahan Branch), Azad university of Khorasgan, Azad university of Najafabad, Payame Noor University of Isfahan, university of Sheykh Bahaei, Sobhe Sadegh Institute of Higher Education, and 6 English teaching professors took part in this study. A questionnaire and an interview were used as the main instruments in the study. The results showed that regarding reading comprehension, the unfamiliar content and inability to understand the subject content that are conceptual knowledge are very important reasons. Regarding summarizing skills, linking sentences smoothly was considered as a very difficult skill. Regarding reading comprehension and summarizing activities in the classroom, students did not prefer to have the key textbook used in class, but they preferred to do supplementary exercises in the class. Furthermore, group discussions on tasks was considered as the least frequent activity, but oral presentations were very frequent in the class and have not affected reading comprehension and summarization. Moreover, According to the interview, unfamiliar content and lack of background knowledge are the major reasons for reading comprehension problems, and lack of knowledge of proper vocabulary is a very significant reason for summarizing problems. Also, in order to improve the reading comprehension and summarization a relevant instruction should be included in the syllabus, updated topics and books should be taught, group discussions should be held in the class, linguistic knowledge should be taught, and finally conceptual knowledge and background knowledge should be developed. The academy can comprise a relevant course in the curriculum to advance the students’ abilities in reading comprehension and summarization of L2 academic articles. Additionally, the instructions can be taught by English teaching professors, and MA and BA students can use them through comprehending and summarizing diverse papers.
