چکیده:
In recent years, the use of mobile devices to learn English as a foreign language has received considerable attention. This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of Word Link as a mobile application on improving self-confidence and reducing anxiety among Iranian EFL learners. To this end, 20 pre-intermediate EFL learners (12 female and 8 male) completed a questionnaire encompassing 2 highly reliable measurement scales which were intended to assess the participant’s self-confidence and anxiety. The participants of the study were a group of females and males aged 14 to 20 years old. They were randomly assigned into two groups: experimental (MALL group) (n=10) and control group (traditional group) (n=10). The experimental group received treatment through a mobile application named Word Link which was a word puzzle game whereas the control group received no treatment. Quick Oxford Placement Test (QOPT) was used to homogenize the participants. First, a pre-questionnaire for anxiety and self-confidence was administered for the control and experimental groups. Three weeks later, after applying treatment and using Word Link as a vocabulary game in the experimental group, the post-questionnaire for anxiety and self-confidence was administered for each group. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the experimental group in terms of reducing anxiety after the treatment in comparison to the control group who received traditional method. Moreover, the result of self-confidence showed significant difference between experimental and control group before and after treatment. The analysis of the interview data showed that the majority of the learners had a positive attitude to adopt and continue to use mobile games such as Word Links during the English course. The findings can be useful for the teachers, researchers, and learners who are learning English as a second or foreign language.
