چکیده:

This study aimed at investigating the impact of using collaborative learning activities in Iranian ESP classes on critical thinking potential of Iranian ESP students. An attempt was also made to uncover the attitudes of Iranian ESP students towards the application of collaborative learning in their classes in reference to its impact on critical thinking potential of ESP students. To this end, 40 ESP students were selected based on their performance on Oxford Quick Placement Test. They were, then, assigned to two groups of experimental and control. The experimental group members received the treatment including activities of collaborative learning and the control group was taught ESP materials devoid of such cooperative activities. The instruments employed in the study to measure the extent of critical thinking change of the students and also their attitude were theCalifornia Critical Thinking Skills Test and a researcher-made attitude questionnaire. The statistical analysis of the results revealed that the critical thinking ability of the students improved due to applying collaborative learning activities and they all represented positive attitudes towards the application of collaborative learning activities in ESP classes. The findings offer implications for ESP learners, teachers, materials developers, and test designers.
