چکیده:
This study was an attempt to investigate the relationship between depression and speaking ability of Iranian male and female EFL students. At first, an OPT test was administered to male and female Iranian EFL students and then based on their scores the 60 homogenous students were selected, after that they were divided into male and female students. Next, the depression questionnaire of Radloff was distributed among 60 students in manual style to separate depressed and undepressed students, next they were given a willingness-to-communicate questionnaire, in the end students participated in a depression speaking test (interview) which was the IELTS speaking test about depression. The researcher was the interviewer. The findings indicated that male EFL learners’ depression was significantly and negatively correlated with their speaking ability. The relationship between depression and speaking ability of females was a stronger and more negative relationship than males. Based on the results of this study it was concluded that depressed male EFL learners were, by and large, not willing to communicate, but the degree to which they were reluctant to speak was not of statistical significance. Results also showed that the depressed female learners were, in general, willing to speak, though not to a significant extent. All the results show that depression can affect speaking ability and willingness to communicate and students should be careful about the fact.
